NORFOLK — Two adults living in squalor at a Norfolk residence have been arrested on suspicion of child abuse and neglect and 38 counts of animal cruelty and neglect.Police officers following up on a dog-bite complaint last week noticed a horrendous smell coming from the house and numerous animals living there.Two children, ages 3 and 5, were removed from the home, and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services was notified. A dog had bitten the younger child.The city condemned the house after police found 21 dogs, three cats and nine other types of animals. A dead dog also was found.A 35-year-old man and 30-year-old woman were taken into custody.

2. Nebraska smoking ban stays; opt-out plan killed
LINCOLN -– Cities and counties won’t be able to opt out of a statewide ban on smoking in public buildings and workplaces.The Health and Human Services Committee voted Wednesday to kill Legislative Bill 611, introduced by State Sen. Russ Karpisek of Wilber.The bill would have allowed local communities to decide whether to adopt less stringent smoking rules.The statewide ban is set to go into effect June 1. It provides exemptions for tobacco shops, some hotel rooms and laboratories used for research on smoking.Private homes used for businesses are not covered, unless they are used as licensed child care facilities.- Martha Stoddard

3. Omaha-based unit called up to help troops in Iraq
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- A reserve transportation outfit has been called up for duty in support of U.S. forces in Iraq. Officials say the members of the 443rd Transportation Company will be honored at a farewell ceremony in Lincoln on Sunday. About 300 soldiers from 19 states will be headed overseas, with most of them coming from Nebraska.
